From SkyWest to United Airlines
"Timing is everything in this industry."
Captain Hovik Grozian’s aviation journey spans over two decades: from teaching students in Cessnas to delivering aircraft from Brazil, and eventually commanding United’s widebodies across oceans. His story is rooted in perseverance, with nearly 20 years at SkyWest before joining United Airlines, where he now flies 757s and 767s out of LAX.
Having served as Assistant Chief Pilot at SkyWest’s busiest hub, Grozian played a key operational role while training captains and coordinating daily airline logistics.
Lessons from Both Sides of the Cockpit Door
“If I’m going to fall off the fence, I’ll fall on the pilot’s side.”
As assistant chief pilot at LAX, Hovik acted as the bridge between corporate leadership and flight crews, managing schedule disruptions, addressing pilot concerns, and communicating directly with ATC on updates. The experience shaped his approach to leadership: advocate for your team, support the mission, and make sure the operation runs safely and smoothly.
Flying the World, One Mission at a Time
“You check the weather, the fuel, the crew, the passengers—and then it’s go time.”
Today, Captain Grozian flies transcontinental and transatlantic routes for United Airlines, from Los Angeles to Hawaii, New York, and Europe. He describes each flight as a full-scale operation requiring constant coordination, pre-departure planning, and in-flight communication. Whether flying long-haul with relief officers or managing crew briefings before takeoff, every detail matters.
Industry Changes, Pilot Shortages, and Rapid Promotions
“It used to take 15 years to become a captain. Now it’s happening in around two!”
Hovik witnessed firsthand the evolution of airline hiring cycles. He reflects on how pilots once spent years climbing the ranks, accumulating thousands of hours in various weather and emergency scenarios. With today’s pilot shortage and increased retirements, that timeline has dramatically shortened, making fast learning, strong discipline, and focused training more crucial than ever.
Advice for Aspiring Aviators
“Write down your dream—and then go make it happen.”
His message to the next generation? Don’t wait. Take that discovery flight, explore aviation careers, and start now. With modern resources and a booming industry, there’s never been a better time to join. Whether you’re aiming for the left seat or a role in airline operations, Grozian’s story is proof that dreams and discipline can take you far!
